Alan started in the marine industry as an apprentice engineer serving on passenger ships, moving to oil and gas tankers seven years later. He remained at sea for a further 28 years serving afloat and ashore in a variety of engineering roles including Chief Engineer Officer, until joining Warsash Maritime Academy in 2005 as a Senior Lecturer.
Initially Alan was lecturing in engineering subjects to students ranging from Cadet Engineer to Chief Engineer, moving over to lecture in Gas Tanker Operations and safety subjects in 2006, and postgraduate learning and teaching from 2008. He is a unit leader within the team delivering the Postgraduate Certificate (Maritime Education and Training) course, and a unit leader for one unit within the MSc Shipping Operations course.
As a Senior Lecturer, Alan develops and delivers courses within his areas of expertise, both at the Academy and on a consultancy basis off-site in the UK and overseas. He is currently studying for a Masters degree in Professional Practice.
Alan holds a class 1 Engineering Certificate of Competency (unlimited) issued by the MCA, and a Certificate of Competency (leisure craft only) as Skipper of sailing vessels up to 24m issued by the RYA on behalf of the MCA. He gained a Postgraduate Certificate (Learning & Teaching) in 2008.
