The qualifications that you will need
to start
Most officer cadets are trained via a programme linked to either
a Foundation Degree (FD) or a Higher National Diploma (HND) and
you will need the following minimum entry qualifications:
- Foundation Degree - 120 UCAS points (perferably including a numerate subject) plus good
grades in GCSE Maths, English and a Physical Science.
- Higher National Diploma - GCSE (Grades A - C),
Standard Grade (1-3) or the equivalent in English, Mathematics,
Physics or Combined Science and at least one other subject.
The qualifications detailed above are the industry
minimum but individual companies may require a higher standard.
The qualifications that you will gain
Depending on the training route followed, all successful officer
cadets will gain either a Foundation Degree (with a pathway to an
Honours Degree), or a Higher National Diploma. Deck Officer Cadets
will achieve either a Foundation Degree in Marine Operations or
a HND in Nautical Science, while Engineer Officer Cadets will achieve
either Foundation Degree in Marine Engineering or an HND in Marine
Engineering.
These qualifications fulfil the academic requirements
for the award of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Certificate
of Competency as Officer of the Watch (OOW) following MCA Oral examination.
They also provide the underpinning knowledge for the higher grade
Certificates of Competency (Chief Mates and Master or Second Engineer
and Chief Engineer).
