Passing Out Ceremonies

Welcome to the Warsash Maritime Academy Officer Cadet Awards page, which is designed to showcase the achievements of Warsash Officer Cadets in front of their peers, sponsoring companies, college staff and importantly, their friends and families.

The Academy presents annual awards to Officer Cadets at the main summer Passing Out Ceremony. A second smaller event is held in November each year for those students in January intakes. The summer ceremony is broadcast online for those who cannot attend the ceremony, so that they can watch the live action.

Forty Two Navigation Cadets from Southampton Solent University’s Warsash Maritime Academy celebrated their graduation to fully qualified officers at their  passing out ceremony in Southampton's Hotel Novotel on Saturday 26th November 2011.

Officer Cadet Passing Out Ceremony - June 2011

On Saturday 18th June 2011, 150 Deck and Engine Officer Cadets celebrated the successful conclusion of their cadetship at the Passing Out Ceremony held at the Southampton Guildhall.

Cadet Awards

The Deck and Engineer Officer Cadet of the Year Awards

These are awarded to the Deck and Marine Engineer Officer Cadets who have performed to the highest standard throughout their cadetship and whose overall attainment in theoretical and practical elements is assessed as being outstanding among their peers by the Academy's lecturing staff.

The Matthew Flinders Navigation Cup

This is awarded to the Deck Cadet who has best contributed to the ideal: 'to promote excellence in navigation'.

Winner: Oliver Boulton - Carnival UK|

The Isambard Brunel Engineering Cup

This is awarded to the Marine Engineer Cadet who has best contributed to the ideal: 'to promote excellence in engineering practice'.

Winner: Louis Williams - Bibby Ship Management/Foreland Shipping  |

The Commendation for Individual Achievement

This award is made to the Deck or Marine Engineer Cadet who has demonstrated exceptional motivation, effort and determination to bring their cadetship to a successful conclusion. The chosen cadet is presented with the Sword of Honour.

Royal Institute of Navigation's John Milner Prize for Navigation

An annual Navigation award for Foundation Degree Deck Cadets is sponsored by The Royal Institute of Navigation

Warsash cadets also win awards presented by external bodies and some of these are listed below.  

British Shipping - Safety Awareness Awards

The competition asks students to suggest an idea which they think would lead to improvements in any aspect of health and safety at sea. The project should be original, innovative and capable of implementation.

The Marine Society Prizes for Best Project Work

These are national awards for the Deck and Marine Engine Officer Cadets who submit the best project work.

Bevis Minter Award

The Merchant Navy officer's union, NUMAST, present this award in rotation to the outstanding Cadet of the Year from each of the principal UK maritime training colleges in turn.

Tony McGinnity Memorial Award

On 27th March 2009 the Merchant Mariners of Wight presented this award to Orry Crews, a Phase five Deck Cadet sponsored by Carisbrooke Shipping. Orry was selected to win the award after submitting his presentation on "A Cadet's Life at Sea in the 21st Century".
