James, 22, is from Swansea in South Wales. He is a deck cadet studying for an HND in Nautical Science here at Warsash Maritime Academy and is sponsored by Chiltern Maritime (MEF).

The maritime industry has always been of particular interest to me and I always had an idea I wanted to join it. The internet provided me with a lot of useful information.

I heard about my company when visiting the Holland America Line ship “Eurodam” for a careers at sea presentation.

So many people I have met aren’t too sure what the Merchant Navy is. I describe it as being the collective
term for commercial shipping. My friends and family think I have my dream job. When I share my
experiences with them, they believe that it is a fantastic choice.

I enjoy everything about this career so far! I have made some friendships that will last for life. There is a strong sense of professionalism and pride for the job. I would definitely recommend this career to other young people. I often encourage people to consider joining. In fact I am about to become a careers at sea ambassador for the MNTB (Merchant Navy Training Board).

The college time is very interesting, there is a lot to take in but the lecturers here are ready to help if ever you need it. There is a good social side to being at college too.

The sea time is daunting at first. The officers and crew soon settle you in and make you feel part of the team. Dependant on what ships you work on, you may have to share a cabin. Fortunately I had my own cabin during my sea phase. The food is fantastic - especially onboard a cruise ship!

I met so many people from many different countries. This helped me understand and appreciate other cultures. I have made some great friends too. Keeping in touch with family is relatively easy - onboard my vessels, we had internet access on the bridge and phone/internet cards were available for a small price.

It would be hard to single out the best moment as there have been so many. I have many highlights from college as well as the Sea, joining my first ship at the port of Civitavecchia in Rome was quite a unique experience. Since I joined, I’ve been to Italy

France, Spain, Croatia, Montenegro, Ireland, and Monaco!

In 5 – 10 years time I certainly aim to have my Chief Officer qualifications. Ultimately my long term plan is to come back to Warsash as a lecturer having gained my masters certificate.
