The Academy’s purpose built fire school provides a
safe but realistic environment in which seafarers can learn the
vital techniques of fighting fires at sea.
In addition to a number of dedicated classrooms, the
fire school consists of:
- A 3 storey steel ship/off shore module for hot fire training
- A breathing apparatus training unit with a simulated double
bottom tank
- A unit which demonstrates the fighting of fires using fixed
installations
- A fire pit, fire screen and other devices for simulating a
variety of fire types
- A LPG training module
- A helicopter fire-fighting and rescue unit
- A confined space training unit

Course Description
This course is designed to form part of the mandatory
basic safety training for all seafarers with designated safety duties.
It deals with the precautions to be taken to minimise the risk of
fires onboard ships, the way in which fires are caused and the first
aid means of extinguishing them.
The course includes practical training in the use of fire extinguishers,
hoses and other fire-fighting equipment. It also covers the use
of breathing apparatus for fire fighting and rescue purposes.
Experienced master mariners followed by practical
exercises on the fire ground conduct the theory sessions. A multi-storey
steel fire unit fitted with simulated shipboard compartments is
used for live fire training.

Course Description
The course forms part of the training requirements for both deck
and engineering officers who wish to qualify for a Certificate of
Competency. It also meets the needs of other seafarers who are designated
to control fire-fighting operations.
Experienced master mariners conduct the theory sessions. These are
followed by practical exercises on the fire ground and in the fire
fighting unit.
The syllabus deals with fire-fighting procedures both
at sea and in port and places particular emphasis on organisation,
tactics and effective command including liaison with shore based
fire fighters. It also covers topics such as ventilation control,
hazards involving dangerous goods and the effects of fire-fighting
water on ship stability. A variety of practical exercises involving
fighting fires of different types and intensity are included with
attendees being assessed on their ability to successfully control
fire-fighting operations.

Course Description
This is a non-mandatory course designed for senior officers and
superintendents. The main part of the course is concerned with management
of the on board fire risk and the strategy and tactics of fire fighting
from the point of view of the senior officer. The course includes
four interactive exercises simulating fire situations using portable
radios and telephones for communication purposes.

Course Description
This course is usually conducted on Saturday mornings. The fire
risks on small craft, fire prevention techniques, and advice on
the type of fire-fighting equipment to be carried is described in
the classroom. This is followed by practical exercises on the fire
ground where course participants extinguish live fires using a variety
of portable extinguishers.

Course Description
The course will train the individual to operate as a fire warden
within their respective organisation.
On completion of the course trainees will have the
knowledge to:
- Describe the chemistry of a fire
- List the actions to be taken in the event of a
fire
- Demonstrate the correct use of portable fire extinguishers
The course is able to be tailored to specific industries
and can be conducted either at WMA or at a suitable customer site.
