Warsash Maritime Academy is able to offer a range
of courses that fulfil the requirements of STCW’95 and are
approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
Training for seafarers not covered by the international
convention requirements (non-STCW) can also be provided.
Courses are available at Warsash or may be delivered
at alternative locations, including on board ship.
We are able to offer a medical training consultancy
service and will be happy to discuss your specific training requirements
and need for bespoke courses. In addition, courses are available
for your non-maritime requirements.

Course Description
A one-day course designed to form part of the
mandatory minimum requirements for familiarisation and basic safety
training for all seafarers with designated emergency duties.
On successful completion of the course, candidates
will receive an Elementary First Aid certificate.

Course Description
This four-day course is for seafarers designated
to provide first aid on board ship and those needing certificates
of competency. The level of knowledge gained will be sufficient
to enable the seafarer to take immediate action in the case of injury
or illness.
On successful completion of the course, candidates
will receive a Proficiency in Medical First Aid On Board Ship certificate.

The candidate must:
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Have successfully completed within the last five years
a Proficiency in Medical First Aid On Board Ship course
in accordance with section A-VI/4-1 of the STCW code*
- Served at sea for at least 18 months
*Candidates who have obtained a Proficiency in Medical Care
On Board Ship certificate within the last five years will
be exempt from this requirement.
Candidates must be conversant with current first aid practice
before starting the course and are strongly advised to undertake
revision of first aid theory and practice. Students are required
to pass a short answer first aid question paper.
Proof of prerequisites is required for inspection at course
commencement.

Course Description
This five-day course is for seafarers designated
to take charge of medical care on board ship and for those requiring
certificates of competency. On completion, the seafarer will have
sufficient knowledge of medical stores and equipment on board to
be able to:
- Diagnose medical problems on board
- Provide medical care to the sick and injured while
they remain on board
- Participate in coordinated schemes for medical
assistance to ships
On successful completion of the course, candidates
will receive a Proficiency in Medical Care On Board Ship Certificate.

Proof of prerequisites is required at commencement of course.
This course is a refresher to update existing skills and knowledge.
Candidates must be conversant with current first aid practice before starting the course and are strongly advised to undertake revision of first aid, theory and practice. Students are required to pass a short answer first aid question paper.
Reading to refresh medical care knowledge prior to course commencement is strongly recommended.
**Those retraining before five years has elapsed since award of either Proficiency in Medical Care or Updated Proficiency in Medical Care certificates may undertake either the full medical care course or the refresher course.
Those retraining after five years has elapsed since award of either Proficiency in Medical Care or Updated Proficiency in Medical Care may undertake the refresher course. It should be noted however that
candidates failing the refresher course under these circumstances may not resit and will be required to undertake a Proficiency in Medical First Aid Course followed by the Proficiency in Medical Care. (reference MIN 318 (M)) |

Course Description
The master, and any other person in charge of the medical care, on a UK flagged
vessel is required to undertake refresher training in medical care every five years
in accordance with:
- EC Directive 92/29 EC
- The Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) Regulations 1997 and Part 6 of the MCA Training and Certifications Guidance – MGN 96 (M)
- MIN 318 (M)
This course ensures the seafarer designated to take charge of medical care on board ship is able to maintain and update his skills and knowledge.
On completion, the seafarer will have sufficient knowledge of medical stores and equipment to be able to:
- Diagnose medical problems on board
- Provide medical care to the sick and injured while they remain on board
- Participate in coordinated schemes for medical assistance to ships
On successful completion of the course, students will receive the certificate of Updated Proficiency in Medical Care On Board Ship.
NB: This is an intensive course and students are expected to have a good level of knowledge and skill retention that will be assessed at course commencement.

Course Description
The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is increasingly being
made available for use by trained first aiders.
This course includes basic resuscitation skills as
well as training the candidate to use the AED. It is recommended
by the European and UK Resuscitation Councils that all trained AED
users refresh their skills at intervals of no longer than one year,
with the ideal being every six months.

Course Description
