Warsash Maritime Academy (WMA) offers a range of Officer Cadet training programmes for initial Deck, Engineer and Electro-Technical Officer qualification. All courses are delivered by our staff of experienced lecturers, most of whom are former seafarers.

Deck Cadet Programme (Degree route) Course Dates & Fees

Warsash Maritime Academy offers a full Deck Officer Cadet programme by a Degree Route, leading ultimately to the award of a UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Deck Officer’s Certificate of Competency (STCW’95 II/I OOW), a Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Marine Operations and a direct top-up pathway to BSc (Hons) Marine Operations Management.

The scheme consists of five phases (usually over 3 years), three spent at WMA for academic delivery and two at sea gaining practical experience. The education and training programme consists of three distinct but complementary elements.

  • Academic education at WMA in conjunction with work-based learning aboard ship to attain the Foundation Degree in Marine Operations, which provides a direct top-up pathway to the BSc (Hons) Marine Operations Management.
  • Practical training aboard ship, including completion of an MNTB Training Record Book. This enables candidates to develop the professional competency needed for initial certification by the UK’s MCA.
  • In addition to the academic studies, the MCA requires Officer Cadets to take a number of safety and survival courses during their cadetship. These include:
    • Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
    • Personal Social and Safety Responsibilities (PSSR)
    • Basic Fire Fighting (BFF)
    • Elementary First Aid (EFA)
    • Efficient Deck Hand (EDH)
    • Medical First Aid Onboard (MFA)
    • Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats (CPSC)
    • Advanced Fire-Fighting (AFF)
    • Global Maritime Distress & Safety System Restricted Operator’s Certificate (GMDSS)
    • Navigation, Radar & ARPA Simulation Training: (Operational Level) course (NARAS0)

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS
This programme is suitable for entrants holding a minimum of 120 UCAS tariff points, preferably including a numerate subject, plus GCSE grade ‘C’ or above in Mathematics, English and Science with Physical Science content.

Deck Cadet Programme (HND route) Course Dates & Fees

Warsash Maritime Academy offers a full Deck Officer Cadet programme by a Higher National Diploma (HND) Route, leading ultimately to the award of a UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Deck Officer’s Certificate of Competency (STCW’95 II/I OOW), the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Nautical Science and an NVQ Level 3 in Merchant Vessel Operations (MVO).

The scheme consists of seven phases (usually over 3 years), four spent at WMA and three at sea gaining practical experience. The training consists of five distinct but complementary elements.

  • An Academic Ramp at WMA, designed to prepare new entrants for study at HND level.
  • Academic education at WMA to attain the HND in Nautical Science and satisfy the Underpinning Knowledge (UPK) requirements for the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Merchant Vessel Operations.
  • NVQ training. An introduction to the philosophy and terminology plus guidance in portfolio construction and supporting skills such as report writing, time management and examination and assessment techniques.
  • Practical training aboard ship, including completion of an MNTB NVQ Level 2/3 Portfolio. This enables candidates to develop the professional competency needed for initial certification by the UK’s MCA.
  • In addition to the academic studies, the MCA requires Officer Cadets to take a number of safety and survival courses during their cadetship. These include:
