Developing the Company Security Officer

About this course

The International Ship & Port Facilities Security Code has introduced the role of the company security officer (CSO) as part of the requirements for the secure management and operation of vessels.

The CSO is required to monitor, verify and ensure the effective compliance with shipboard and shores based security requirements, ensure effective communications between the shipboard security and port facilities security officers and advise on threat levels likely to be encountered by the vessel.

This unit will therefore critically explore issues that impact upon the effective performance of the role of CSO, encouraging students to reflect upon the role and the means by which they analyse and evaluate their organisation’s security performance and influence its future development.

The taught component will be delivered via lectures, group work, discussion and analysis of case studies. Students will undertake work-based research into an area related to the unit content, building upon the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired and industry best practice to produce a management report aimed at further developing the organisation’s security performance.
