Officer Cadet Training Programmes
Warsash Maritime Academy (WMA) offers a range of Officer Cadet training programmes for initial Deck, Engineer and Electro-Technical Officer qualification. All courses are delivered by our staff of experienced lecturers, most of whom are former seafarers.
High professional standards are demanded of ships' officers and a cadetship is a challenging programme of education and training that prepares students to meet those high standards.
Learning is delivered by a variety of methods which include formal lectures, practical demonstrations and mentoring. Progress is measured by written and oral examinations, together with the assessment of practical skills and competences.
Success requires a committed and mature approach to both practical and academic work and sponsors take a close interest in the progress of their cadets.

Commercial Yacht (Engine)
The MCA's Code of Practice for Safety of Large Commercial Sailing & Motor Vessels, published in 1997, requires that engineering personnel serving on yachts and sail training vessels of less than 3,000 gt should be qualified in accordance with the UK's current Training and Certification Regulations.
However, since the introduction of STCW 95, it has become apparent that some engineering personnel serving on yachts of this type, may be unable to meet the full UK Merchant Navy requirements, as set out in the Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) Regulations 1997.
To address the needs of seafarers serving on yachts and sail training vessels of less than 3,000 gt and under 9,000 kW propulsion power the MCA, in consultation with the "large yacht" industry, sail training organisations and United Kingdom maritime colleges, has developed a route leading to engineer certification limited to this sector. These provisions also apply to privately owned yachts of a similar size not covered by the code.
The route makes use of a series of training modules which include tuition, written examinations and ancillary training which, in conjunction with suitable engineering practical training and yacht service, permit entry to an MCA oral examination. Warsash Maritime Academy is approved by the MCA (UK) to deliver the relevant training modules. Success in the MCA oral examination leads to the issue of either a STCW 95 certificate of competency limited to service on yachts and sail training vessels, or a Marine Engine Operator licence limited to service on yachts and sail training vessels. No MCA oral examination or written examination is required for candidates taking the Approved Engine Course certificate.
These qualifications, except the AEC and MEOL, will be issued in accordance with the requirements of STCW 95. The AEC and MEOL are not STCW certificates.
The following courses are offered by Warsash Maritime Academy. Eligibility can only be assessed by the Seafarer Standards Branch of the MCA (UK) as detailed in MGN156.

Bridge Procedures
Navigating officers can continue their professional development by honing teamwork and bridge management skills in the Academy's full mission ship's bridge simulator. The simulator enables an accurate replication of handling characteristics of vessels ranging from VLCCs to small patrol craft. Nocturnal and daylight operations can be simulated in a wide variety of geographic locations and other areas can be constructed to meet customer requirements.
Pre - employment or pre - promotion assessments can be carried out on the simulator and all exercises are closely monitored and recorded to facilitate effective debriefing.
The simulator is regularly used for port development work and research related to casualty investigation.

Commercial Yacht (Deck)
Please note that the OOW Navigation and Radar course is now 15 days. The course syllabus has not changed.
These courses have been developed to meet the requirements of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and provide those serving as an officer on a commercial yacht with the professional training they need in order to meet the increasing demands of this market sector.
Further details regarding qualification requirements and certification routes can be found on our website. A copy of the Training Record Book can be downloaded from the MCA website www.mcga.gov.uk| .
Warsash Maritime Academy has approval from the UK's Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) to offer yachtsmen all the course modules required to obtain an internationally recognised certificate of competency. Scroll down this page for information of the Officer of the Watch and Master modules we offer including dates and fees. Full details of the requirements are provided in MSN 1802, which can be found on the MCA website: www.mcga.gov.uk| .
The training schemes are designed to satisfy the requirements for harmonising deck and engineer officer certification on large commercial sailing and motor vessels, in accordance with UK regulations and the principles of STCW95.
Modules and short courses are provided for personnel serving on:
commercial yachts or sail training vessels of 24m and over which do not carry cargo or more than 12 passengers: and privately owned yachts of 24m and over which do not carry cargo or more than 12 passengers.
Gaining a formal qualification will allow officers to command and operate sophisticated 'Super yachts' and will ensure that they are fully conversant with modern navigational techniques and the legal and technical aspects of operating a large craft.
Participants in these courses will, where appropriate, have the exclusive use of our full bridge simulator, which models the handling characteristics of a super yacht.
The Deck certificate structure (limited to yachts) is as follows:

Ship Handling
Pilots and senior officers can develop their existing skills and understanding of ship handling at our manned model Ship Handling Centre. The Centre is located at Marchwood on Southampton Water and utilises a sheltered 10 acre lake for practical exercises. There are many berths plus enclosed basins and harbour areas as well as buoy channels, some with critical bends and turns. A long canal that includes a turn and a difficult entrance is positioned along the eastern side of the lake.
A fleet of 7 models represent ships up to 300,000 dwt are used to provide tuition in ship handling in a controlled and safe environment. The vessels replicated include a twin screw shuttle tanker, two loaded VLCCs, a car carrier, panamax bulk carrier and a twin screw passenger/ro-ro ship. Model tugs are used to demonstrate various aspects of tug operations for both experienced and trainee pilots and ships' officers.
The Academy is uniquely placed to provide Pilots with professional development training. The combination of our manned model ship handling facility and our full mission bridge simulator provides a unique training resource that utilises the best features of both Manned models and electronic simulation. Courses ranging in duration from 2 days upwards cater for Pilots whatever their experience and can be tailored to meet individual customer requirements.
A wide range of geographical locations and ship types can be simulated which means that exercise may be designed to include ship types and pilotage situations that are specific to a client's training needs. Additional geographic areas can be added to an electronic simulation to meet a client's particular requirements.
Nocturnal, reduced visibility and full day light situations can be simulated as can the effects of wind, tide, currents and swell.
The portfolio of "own ships" types ranges from VLCCs, in differing load/ballast conditions, to small coasters. Several of the "own ships" are fitted with bow and/or stern thrusters and others have twin screws. Working with tugs in both direct and indirect modes, including escort towage, can be incorporated into the exercises and many customers include tug-masters in the course participants.
