Entry level

New entrants / pathway to certification

Under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), all new entrants to the maritime industries are required to complete an STCW Basic Safety Training Week before joining a vessel.

For those wishing to progress their career from initial entry level to become a deck (navigation) officer, the Officer of the Watch (OOW) is responsible for the safety of the vessel, the crew and its passengers during the period of his or her watch at sea or in port. It is a critical role which requires a substantial amount of training and sea experience.

To help you understand the progression from initial entry level all the way up to Captain (Master), please view our deck officer progression charts
