Updated Proficiency in Medical Care on Board Ship

  • Course Code(s) FUPMCP
  • Duration 3 Days
  • Prerequisites

This is a refresher course and is intensive in nature. Further guidance should be sought from the course administrator if you are unsure about your ability to undertake this course.

    Medical Care Revalidation

On EU member state flagged vessels the master and any worker delegated the use of medical supplies must receive special training updated at least every five years taking into account the specific risks and needs connected with the different categories of vessel.

For UK flagged vessels the MCA has interpreted this to be the master or any person designated to take charge of medical care, must hold a recognised Proficiency in Medical Care or Updated Proficiency in Medical Care certificate issued within the last five years.

Delegates updating their training may undertake this refresher course or choose to do a full medical care course.

It is for the training centre to decide the level of any remedial training required prior to or during the refresher course, to ensure achievement of standards required.

If a delegate has had limited or no “hand on” practical experience since their original training, Warsash Maritime Academy strongly recommends that a full medical care course is undertaken and not the intensive refresher courses. If a medical care certificate is more than five years old the delegate is recommended to undertake a first aid course prior to a full medical care course.

Proof of pre-requisites will be inspected at enrolment. Delegates attending this course are required to have successfully completed a Proficiency in Medical Care on Board Ship course in accordance with section A-VI/4-2 of the STCW Code or hold a certificate of Updated Proficiency in Medical Care on Board Ship.

N.B: additional revision/basic training may need to be undertaken during or prior to the course. It is for the training centre to determine the extent of any such additional revision/training in order to ensure achievement of the standards required for Medical Care on Board Ship.

Delegates must be conversant with current first aid practice before starting the course and are strongly advised to undertake revision of first aid theory and practice prior to attending.

    Contact Course Administrator for guidance.
