MSC SHIPPING OPERATIONS

Entry level

Applicants must have ONE of the following:

  • A recognised Honours degree in Maritime Studies, Shipping, Business, Law or other appropriate discipline (normally at 2.2 or higher) plus work experience in the maritime industry to a reasonable level of responsibility.
  • A Certificate of Competence as Master or Chief Engineer, Class 1 Master Mariner, Class 1 Engineer, Standards of Training Certificates and Watchkeeping Management Level Qualifications, or equivalent, and work experience in the maritime industry to a reasonable level of responsibility, such as 1st or 2nd Officer, 2nd or 3rd Engineer, or equivalent.
  •  A Higher National Diploma or Foundation Degree in an appropriate discipline plus relevant professional qualifications and experience.

Additionally

  • All MSc candidates must be employed in, or have recently been employed in the shipping/maritime industry.
  • Applicants do not necessarily have to have a degree to be eligible to enter the programme. 
  • Entrants with successful prior learning at postgraduate level may be considered, where appropriate, for exemptions from units of the MSc. 
  • Candidates whose first language is not English must have IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT score of 100 or more.

Warsash Maritime Academy, the University’s specialised maritime faculty, offers this new course, designed to be a unique career development package thanks to its flexibility, accessibility, specialised content and work-based applications.

The course aims to cater for the needs of experienced ship-board officers who want to make the transition to shore-side management; shore-based employees who want to extend their skills and move up the career ladder; maritime professionals looking to expand their employment horizons by gaining a higher education award; and shipping industry employers who wish to retain and refresh experienced staff in order to enhance the management efficiency of their companies.

All course content is geared towards the maritime and shipping industries. Units are developed and delivered by staff who have recognised subject expertise and research interests in human factors in shipping, maritime safety and maritime education and training, and extensive experience of working in and with the maritime industries.

This course develops the high-level specialist and management competencies required in positions such as designated person ashore, fleet training manager, competence assurance manager, ship manager and marine superintendent.

Flexible learning

MSc Shipping Operations is a course with specially-designed learning materials and activities, assessment tasks, and support and communication facilities (including discussion forums, study and research skills development materials, email and conferencing contact) are available through our virtual learning environment. This enables you to learn as part of an online community that has been customised to meet the learning needs and expectations of mature professionals.

Course content

Core units

All students undertake five core units: International Maritime Context; Postgraduate and Self-Managed Study; Business Research Skills; Professional Skills and Practice Portfolio (each worth 15 academic credits); Project (worth 60 credits).

Professional Skills and Practice Portfolio and Project

Both these units involve student-negotiated work-based investigations, for which you will be supported by an industry-based mentor alongside your academic tutor. This mentoring arrangement is designed to add value to your learning experience and to the outcomes of your project, particularly in terms of the practical and professional relevance and currency of the work undertaken.

Option units

In addition to the core content, you can choose four option units from two ‘strands’.

Managing the Human Element in the Shipping Industry

Strategic Management of the Human Element; Maritime Talent Management;

Performance and Reward Management; Employee Relations and Engagement.

Managing Maritime Safety

Risk and Safety Management; Legal Process; Safety Culture; Accident Investigation and Organisational Learning.
