Warsash Maritime Academy offers an academic top-up programme leading to a Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Marine Operations Management.
Course Pre-Requisites
Candidates should hold either a Foundation Degree in Marine Operations or a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Nautical Science with at least 12 months industrial experience after attaining the HND.
Course Aims

To build upon the students' nautical knowledge and provide them with a sound understanding of the principles of management and their application in the core functional areas of the commercial maritime industry (i.e. Operations, Safety and Finance).

To develop the graduate skills of managing time and resources effectively while working independently or as part of a team.

To develop a broadly thinking person to enable ready acceptance and promotion of change and responsibility

To develop technical, personal and managerial qualities required of a ship's Officer and a senior maritime manager ashore.

Provide an education that will enable graduating students to respond to varied employment opportunities both afloat and ashore.
Method of delivery
The course is delivered via blended learning commencing with an 11 week period of attendance at the Academy. During this period the areas of study will be introduced and some initial assessment carried out.
Students will then complete the course via flexible learning over a period of up to 18 months. During this period students will be supported by nominated tutorial staff.
In order to be awarded the qualification, students must achieve 120 x level 3 credits made up from the two compulsory units and a choice of two from the three optional units (as described in the 'Course Content' section on the next page).

The purpose of this unit is to provide the student with knowledge of the impact of technology on navigation, cargo and safety systems. It allows students to acquire a deeper understanding of the means whereby these systems can be integrated to enhance shipboard operations and traffic management.
It also provides the basis on which students can consider future developments in maritime technology. The principles of ergonomic design as applied to the ship’s bridge and control rooms are introduced.

The Project is an opportunity for students to demonstrate sustained, independent work. It is the platform on which students’ exhibit the knowledge, skills and intellectual maturity acquired during the course.
In the initial stages students will identify project aims and objectives and conduct initial research. Students then consider the planning, sequencing and efficient time management of the project.
The subject of the project will be decided by negotiation with course tutors and sponsoring company if appropriate. The project is conducted individually.

This unit is designed to give students a understanding of the application of United Kingdom and International Legislation to ensure the safety of life at sea; the protection of the marine environment and the carriage of goods at sea.
It also includes the use of commercial law and practices and its application to shipboard practices. It will also introduce case law and research into a particular case as an assignment.
