Chief Mate and Master - Training Programme Options
Warsash Maritime Academy offers a number of training programmes leading to the Chief Mate/Master Certificates of Competency under the governance of the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).
Chief Mate/Master (HND Nautical Science & Examination Route)
A training programme leading to Chief Mate and Master Certificates of Competency for candidates who hold a current STCW '95 Officer of the Watch Certificate or old Class 4/Class 3 certificate ( without a valid HND in Nautical Science).
Candidates will take a three-term (36 weeks) Chief Mate and Master course of study with continuous assessment and end-of-course tests in most subjects, plus two written examinations in 'Navigation' and 'Ship Stability' conducted by the Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) on behalf of the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA). Successful candidates are also awarded HND Part 2 in Nautical Science, or a full HND if HND Part 1 is already held.

Chief Mate/Master (Post-HND Examination Route)
A 15-week training programme leading to Chief Mate and Master Certificates of Competency for candidates who have successfully completed a full Cadetship (also achieved NVQ Level 3 in Merchant Vessel Operations and a full HND in Nautical Science ) but do not wish to follow the NVQ Level 4 route to Chief Mate/Master certification by the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).

Chief Mate/Master (Post-HND NVQ Level 4 Route)
A 15-week training programme leading to Chief Mate and Master Certificates of Competency for candidates who have successfully completed a full Cadetship (also achieved NVQ Level 3 in Merchant Vessel Operations and a full HND in Nautical Science ) and wish to follow the NVQ Level 4 route to Chief Mate/Master certification by the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).

Master's MCA Oral Examination
A four-week training programme leading to a Master's (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency for candidates who hold a current STCW '95 Chief Mate (Unlimited) Certificate or old Class 2 certificate, and have acquired the requisite sea service.
Candidates must already have successfully completed a Chief Mate/Master course of study and passed either NVQ Level 4 (Merchant Vessel Operations) assessment or two written examinations in 'Navigation' and 'Ship Stability' conducted by the Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) on behalf of the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).
