The course duration includes 11 weeks tuition followed by an examination week. The remaining three weeks are provided for NARAS(M) course, NVQ Level 4 assessment and MCA Signals & Oral preparation. Please note that this course is now only available to candidates registered with Edexel for NVQ Level 4 before 31 December 2008.

Course Description
A programme of study leading to Chief Mate and Master Certificates of Competency for candidates who have successfully completed a full Cadetship (also achieved NVQ Level 3 in Merchant Vessel Operations and a full HND in Nautical Science) and wish to follow the NVQ Level 4 route to Chief Mate/Master certification by the UK's Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).
Candidates will receive tuition and assessment in 'Marine Engineering Systems' & 'Emergency Planning' as well as the NARAS(M) course, NVQ Level 4 assessment and preparation for MCA Signals & Oral examinations.
Candidates should have a minimum 12 months sea service as a watchkeeping Deck Officer while holding STCW'95 Table A II/1 Certificate of Competency (Watchkeeper), and hold a valid STCW 'Medical First Aid' course certificate and a valid personal medical fitness certificate recognised by the MCA.
Candidates must also hold an STCW certificate in 'Proficiency in Medical Care Onboard Ship' before taking their MCA Oral examination. If not already held, this course can be undertaken at WMA outside of the main course.
Once a Chief Mate Certificate of Competency has been achieved, candidates must return to sea to accumulate a further minimum 12 months sea service as a watchkeeping Chief Mate (or 18 months sea service as a watchkeeping Deck Officer) before taking a Master's MCA oral examination to gain full Master's certification.
