Prerequisites

Be at least 17 years of age, hold either a Navigational Watch Rating Certificate or Steering Certificate, and provide proof of 12 months sea service in the Deck Department. ENG1 and Basic Safety Training week STCW'95

Course Description
Shipboard organisation & operations – Shipboard organisation parts of vessel, deck equipment, lookout reporting, helm orders, anchoring and mooring arrangements etc.
Pilots ladders and means of access – Rigging a pilot ladder, means of access, boarding arrangements etc.
Cargo work – Hatch covers, derricks & cranes, blocks & tackles, containers and securing arrangements etc.
Safety – COSWOP, IMO safety signs, enclosed spaces, fire extinguishers, lifeboat & liferaft launching etc.
Seamanship – Rope types & construction, knots, bends & hitches, rigging a bosun's chair and stage, rope and wire splicing, whipping and seizing, parcelling and servicing.
Successful completion of the DH training forms part of the requirements for issue of an Able Seaman's (AB) certificate or for Deck Officer Certification (STCW'95 Table AII/I – Certificate of Competency – Watch keeping).
