ETO CADET PROGRAMME (HND ROUTE)

Course Description

Warsash Maritime Academy (WMA) offers a full Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) Cadet programme by a Higher National Diploma (HND) Route, leading ultimately to the award of a UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Engineer Officer's Certificate of Competency (STCW'95 III/I OOW), the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Marine Engineering, a GMDSS Radio Maintenance Certificate and an Electronic Navigation Equipment Maintenance (ENEM) Certificate.

The scheme consists of five phases (usually over 3 years), three spent at WMA and two at sea gaining practical experience. The training consists of six distinct but complementary elements.

  • An HE Entry course at WMA, designed to prepare new entrants for study at HND level.
  • Engineering workshop skills training at WMA to MNTB-approved standard.
  • Academic education at WMA to attain the HND in Marine Engineering and satisfy the Underpinning Knowledge (UPK) requirements for the IAMI written examinations
  • Practical training aboard ship, including completion of an MNTB Training Record book. This enables candidates to develop the professional competency needed for initial certification by the UK's MCA.
  • In addition to the academic studies, the MCA requires Officer Cadets to take a number of safety and survival courses during their cadetship. These include:
    • Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
    • Personal Social and Safety Responsibilities (PSSR)
    • Basic Fire Fighting (BFF)
    • Elementary First Aid (EFA)
    • Medical First Aid Onboard (MFA)
    • Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats (PSCRB)
    • Advanced Fire-Fighting (AFF)
    • GMDSS Radio Maintenance and ENEM certificates

Entry Qualifications

This programme is suitable for entrants holding a minimum of four GCSE awards at Grade 'C' or above Mathematics English and Science (with Physical Science content). Equivalent qualifications may also be acceptable.
