Ship Handling Centre, Timsbury Lake
Warsash Maritime Academy, part of Southampton Solent University’s Maritime & Technology Faculty, is pleased to announce that our new manned model Timsbury Lake is open. The facility was officially opened by The University’s Chancellor, Admiral, The Right Honourable Lord West of Spithead on 21 June, although the first courses ran in May 2011.
The original manned model shiphandling centre – one of only five in the world - was moved from its 10-acre Marchwood site to Timsbury, near Romsey, after this was identified as an ideal site for Warsash’s first class training for the international shipping industry.
Now work has been carried out on the lake to enable ship models to navigate berths, basins and channels and recreate a variety of port scenarios, canal transits and berthing operations for officers and pilots to practice shiphandling skills. The facility to practice complex maritime manoeuvres in complete safety makes it a key training tool for the shipping industry.
Director of Warsash Maritime Academy, Andrew Hair, commented: “Timsbury represents a major investment by Solent on behalf of Warsash Maritime Academy that will keep us in the forefront of maritime training. Thirty years of experience has been utilised to make this facility really stand out from all our competitors.”
