We are delighted to announce that Andrew Kingshott has been awarded first prize for his project 'The International Identification of Oxygen Depletive Areas and Entry' at the British Shipping Safety Awareness Awards.
Sponsored by Trinity House, the awards are open to cadets and trainee ratings in the merchant navy, and invite entrants to create an original safety idea, with realistic industry potential, which would lead to improvements in any aspect of health and safety at sea.
Andrew is a Foundation Degree Marine Engineering Cadet, sponsored by Maersk, from the September 2010 cohort. His winning project proposed a system of warning indicators for unauthorised entry into enclosed spaces, incorporating a bespoke paint pattern to be put on to areas of access to enclosed spaces and a method by which the engine and control room can see the status of access to them.
As part of his award, Andrew received a cash prize. Warsash Maritime Academy was also in receipt of an award, for which John Bazley, Head of School of Professional Studies, was present to collect.
The prize giving ceremony took place at the UK Chamber of Shipping on 11 December 2012 and was hosted by the UK Chamber's Director-General Mark Brownrigg. The prizes were presented by Captain Ian McNaught, Deputy Master of Trinity House.
