David Dearsley receives Honorary Degree
David Dearsley received an honorary degree in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the international maritime industry.
Southampton Solent University’s Chancellor, Admiral Lord Alan West of Spithead, presented David, with the honorary degree of Doctor of Maritime studies during a ceremony at Southampton Guildhall on Monday November 2.
As Secretary General of the International Maritime Employers’ Committee - an organisation that represents in excess of 100 companies operating more than 5,500 ships and employing over 145,000 seafarers of all nationalities - he has been heavily influential in maritime industrial relations.
David has also been Secretary to the Ship Owners Group at the International Labour Organisation and Secretary to the two bodies responsible for conducting pay negotiations with the International Transport Federation, the Joint Negotiating Group and the international Bargaining Forum.
He is an enthusiastic supporter of the University’s Warsash Maritime Academy, assisting with innovative research and course delivery.
David was a deck cadet at Warsash Maritime Academy in the 1960's and in his acceptance speech he spoke of his fond memories of his time spent here in his youth. He also described how everywhere he goes in the world, people know Warsash Maritime Academy and spoke of the long standing association between Warsash and quality standards of training.
