WMA in Manila for PGCert

Quentin Cox (course leader) and Alan Campion (unit leader) have just returned from Manila, where they have been working on Unit 1 of the Postgraduate Certificate in Maritime Education and Training with the latest cohort of 16 Filipino maritime lecturers.

This is the third year of running the course, which is sponsored by the International Maritime Training Trust, and it has become a very popular and successful experience for the students and staff alike. The unit involves lectures and group work on the principles of learning and teaching and is supported through SSU's myCourse VLE. This group, which comprises staff from two maritime academies and one training centre, was inducted back in November by the other members of the course team, David Gatfield, Claire Pekcan and Mike Barnett.

The students will be busy from now till June working on assignments and reflecting on their professional practice. In June, the group will travel to Warsash for a three week period working alongside our own staff, sharing experiences and taking part in discussions on various aspects of teaching and learning.

Mike also took the opportunity while in Manila this time to hold a seminar for 75 senior staff at academies in the Philippines to raise awareness of this course to other institutions. The seminar generated considerable interest, and future plans for the PGCert (International) include options to involve lecturers from other parts of the world, and to provide opportunities to continue studies to Masters level for certificate graduates.
