Duke of Edinburgh visits Warsash Ship Handling Centre
The Duke of Edinburgh visited Warsash Maritime Academy’s new manned model ship handling centre at Timsbury on Tuesday 4 October.
This was the second time that The Duke has visited the Academy’s ship handling facility, the previous occasion being to the Marchwood location in 1996.
His Royal Highness enjoyed a tour of the lake in the model ‘Challenger’, and then headed back to dry land to visit the classroom and work shop facilities, where he met staff and delegates before watching them undertake a range of complex manoeuvres in the manned models.
The dignitaries who greeted His Royal Highness on his arrival included, Admiral Lord West, Chancellor of Southampton Solent University and former First Sea Lord; Efthimios Mitropoulos, Secretary General IMO; Sir Alan Massey, Chief Executive MCA and Michael Parker, President of the Chamber of Shipping.
Southampton Solent University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Van Gore commented: “The University is honoured and delighted that the Duke of Edinburgh has visited our new world class ship handling facility for the global maritime industry.”
Warsash Maritime Academy, part of Southampton Solent University, officially opened the £2.7 million Centre on 21 June at a special ceremony presided over by Lord West.

Drawing on the Academy’s thirty years of manned model ship handling experience, Timsbury lake has been developed to provide a wide range of berths, basins and channels that create a huge variety of realistic ship handling scenarios. Ship’s officers and pilots on the courses can practice complex manoeuvres such as canal transits and berthing operations in restricted harbour areas, in complete safety.
