New entrant maths study guide

A career in the Merchant Navy is a worthwhile and rewarding one that involves a sound knowledge of mathematical principles which students are taught to apply to modern ship operations. Whether training to become a deck or an engineering officer, one of the first courses taken is a study of maths. Shortly after arrival at Warsash, officer cadets are asked to take a test to assess each individual’s current level so that we are aware of any support that may be needed during the maths course.

As many students have different abilities and may have studied maths to different levels, we've prepared a maths study guide to enable students to revise some of the topics studied at GCSE or on equivalent professional courses. It should refresh and consolidate students’ basic knowledge so that when they arrive at Warsash they're ready to begin their professional and academic courses.

If a student has a sound understanding of this work, they'll be able to progress quickly to the applied section of their course with ample time to study new topics thoroughly. We've included exercises and answers for students to test themselves as they work through this material.

To consolidate the mathematical knowledge that students need to be familiar with, the material contained within these files is available in zip folders for download (see below): one for future deck cadets and one for future engineering cadets. Select the relevant folder, and this will lead you to two further folders, depending on which academic route you're studying. Select the course that you're enrolling on and you'll find a number of pdf files. Click on these, and you're now ready to start studying.
