Chief Engineer (Y4) - Auxiliary Equipment

About this course

Important information: This course is now being run as Small Vessel Second Engineer - Auxiliary Equipment Part One. It is part of the new Second Engineer Officer qualification for Small Vessels (less than 9000kW and less than 3,000 GT) with an unlimited area limitation.

This course is based on lecturer led learning and revision, followed by the exam on the afternoon of the final day. A full set of study notes is provided on application and six weeks’ preparatory study must be undertaken prior to attending the Academy.

This course now covers new and experienced crew that wish to move into the Small Vessel environment as engineers on vessels such as;

  • Fishing Vessels
  • Superyachts
  • Tugs
  • Workboats
  • Standby
  • Seismic Survey
  • Oceanographic Research Vessels
  • Government Patrol Vessels

This course and examination covers the working principles and maintenance of:

  • Valves
  • Pumps
  • Compressed air system
  • Hydraulic control systems
  • Propellers and thrusters
  • Shafting and bearings
  • Electrical plant
