Chief Mate (Unlimited) - Post Foundation Degree Route

About this course

This course enables candidates who have successfully completed a deck officer cadetship via the Foundation Degree (FdSc) route to achieve Chief Mate and Master certification. Candidates who completed their FdSc at another UK maritime college should submit their MCA education and training letter at the time of application.

Candidates will receive a number of presentations designed to update them on current marine issues and legislation, and prepare them for the MCA oral exams. The NAEST and HELM (Management Level) courses are also part of the programme.

Candidates must hold a valid personal medical fitness certificate recognised by the MCA.

Candidates must also hold an STCW certificate in Proficiency in Medical Care. This certificate must be no more than five years old. Additionally, candidates who completed the NAEST(O) course prior to 1 January 2005 must have completed an IMO Model 1.27 approved MCA ECDIS course before undertaking the NAEST(M) course. Both of these courses can be undertaken at Warsash outside of the main course.

Once a Chief Mate CoC has been achieved, candidates must complete 36 months' watchkeeping service while holding an OOW Unlimited II/1 CoC before taking the exam for Master certification. This period may be reduced to 24 months if at least 12 months of such seagoing service has been served as Chief Mate while holding a Chief Mate Unlimited II/1 CoC.
