About this course

The aim of the course is to train bridge watchkeeping officers and other interested personnel in the safe and efficient use of ECDIS. The course meets the guidance of IMO Model Course 1.27, the operational use of ECDIS, for generic ECDIS training. It is also approved by Transas for type-specific training on the Navi Sailor 4000 ECDIS.

Students who successfully complete this course will be issued with certification for generic ECDIS training (to IMO 1.27).

If you require a certificate for Transas Navi Sailor 4000 ECDIS equipment training, you can obtain this for an additional fee - further details will be provided during the course.

Training takes place over five days in the ECDIS training suite at the maritime simulation centre at our East Park Terrace campus. It follows the recommendation of IMO Model Course 1.27 and concentrates on the safe and efficient use of ECDIS at sea in a variety of conditions, from ocean passages to pilotages.

The essential legal and theoretical background to the use and carriage of ECDIS is covered in sufficient detail to allow students to use ECDIS correctly and safely.

Practical exercises using the desktop simulators reinforce the theory and provide an opportunity to develop and practice responses to emergency situations and use reversionary modes, including loss of GPS signal.

STCW 2010 Manila Amendments

The STCW Convention 1978 has been amended by the 2010 Manila Amendments and contains new requirements:

All deck officers (including yacht officers) applying for a new or revalidating a UK Certificate of Competency, are required to include an ECDIS certificate with their application.  If an ECDIS certificate is not included with an application, the CoC will have the following limitation: "From 1 January 2017, this certificate is not valid for service on ships fitted with ECDIS",

The Master and all deck officers of UK Flagged vessels (including yachts) which have ECDIS as their primary means of navigation are required to have completed both generic and equipment specific ECDIS training. (see also MIN 503).

Other flag states have similar requirements, you are advised to check with them directly if you are unsure.

For further guidance on the new requirements, please see our information sheet:
