About this course
Utilising the academy’s full mission engine room simulator, this four-and-a-half day course is designed to assess the competence of senior engineering officers prior to them being employed or promoted by a shipping company.
This type of assessment will give a shipping company important information about the competence their employees and their employees’ ability to perform competently in the role of a senior officer within an onboard ship management team.
Candidates for assessment are presented with a range of challenging scenarios and their performance is assessed throughout the course.
Companies can provide their own safe operating procedures to be followed during the course if they wish, or the academy’s own procedures can be used.
In order to be able to run the course a minimum of three engineering officers is required and the maximum number of delegates is four. Assessment can be undertaken on any number of the delegates attending the course.
After the course a written assessment report will be produced and sent to the company for each of candidates being assessed. The report will cover the following main competencies:
- Leadership and managerial skills
- Situational awareness
- Co-operation and team-working
- Communication skills
- Planning skills
- Decision-making skills
The company is welcome to send representatives to observe the course delegates in the simulator during the exercises if they wish.
