About this course

This innovative and flexible programme provides a broad-based introduction to the world of business, delivering a firm grounding in modern practices and exploring contemporary issues.

You will learn to research and understand the ever-changing business world, applying theoretical models to real-life case studies and to your own organisation through a work-based project, getting valuable hands-on experience.

This course is designed to be flexible and fit around your own working schedule, with the option to leave and re-join the course as required. With online support and access to the course materials through our virtual learning environment, you’ll study at your own pace and attend four face-to-face weekend tuition sessions at the University throughout the year.

By carefully selecting appropriate options, you may be able to obtain exemptions from some examinations of many professional bodies, including the Chartered Institute of Marketing, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. Options are offered subject to demand and availability, but would normally include the following:

  • Management Dimensions in Europe (20 credits)
  • Marketing Management (20 credits)
  • Human Resources Development (20 credits)

Teaching, learning and assessment

Four classroom-based weekend sessions each academic year, running from Friday until Sunday. The dates of the sessions vary, but will be approximately 8-10 weeks apart.

You are then supported by our virtual learning environment and our tutors via email, telephone and in person. Our course is not designed for distance learning, although we do all we can to support any missed sessions.

Between sessions at the University you’ll carry out individual home and work-based study, using our specially developed virtual learning environment (VLE) to access readings, journal articles, relevant business news and other course information. You’ll be able to join a study community with your cohort, taking part in online group discussions and receiving peer and tutor support through Skype, forums and feedback exercises.


This course is assessed through assignments, presentations, in-class tests and exams.

Our facilities

As a student with the University you will also have full access to our library resources, on-line journals and IT support, as well as career advice and guidance through our award winning Students' Information Centre support service.

Web-based learning

Solent’s virtual learning environment provides quick online access to assignments, lecture notes, suggested reading and other course information.

Transferable skills
Through your classroom sessions you will develop key teamwork, presentation and communications skills, while the online aspect of the course will boost your IT and research skills. Coursework, including your work-based project, will build your analytical, problem-solving and project management skills.

Entry level

There are no formal qualification requirements for this course, and all applications – whether you’re a school-leaver entering employment for the first time, or a mature student looking to develop your career on a part-time basis – are considered on their individual merits.

If you already possess an HNC or HND you may be granted exemptions on a subject-for-subject basis.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:
  • IELTS 5.5 (5.0 in writing)
  • TOEFL IBT 71(19 in writing)
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic 51 (46 in writing)
  • or equivalent.
Qualifications are checked before enrolment and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies, when coming to study at the University.
