Further Offshore Emergency Training with CAEBS and Escape Chute Training

About this course

This one-day course provides refresher training for holders of an in-date, OPITO-approved BOSIET or TBOSIET, or FOET or TFOET certificate.

The training covers the requirements for areas of offshore activities where Compressed Air Emergency Breathing Systems (CAEBS) are in use, inclusive Escape Chute Training (ECT) meets mandatory or company specific training requirements with this safety equipment. The combined training program is fully approved by OPITO with supporting certification (see below) and both accredited to their Vantage database upon successful completion.

Note: the maximum interval between the successful completion of BOSIET training and subsequent completion of FOET training is four years. Continuation training may be undertaken 90 days prior to the expiry date of existing certification. OPITO has authorised a 'renewal' window prior to a current certificate expiry date for delegates in order to complete any OPITO-approved 'further' (refresher) training course without the delegate being time-penalised.

View the dispensation rules if your BOSIET or FOET certificate has expired.

Please Note: As of 26th March 2018 onwards, OPITO require delegates to participate in CA-EBS In Water Training (IWT) exercises. As a result, delegates undertaking OPITO BOSIET/HUET/FOET with CA-EBS courses will have to provide both the following at the point of enrolment:

1.       Valid OGUK Medical/or valid Offshore medical issued by a body outside of the UK (recognised as equivalent to the OGUK). Other medical certificates recognised by the Diving at Work Regulations 1997 exemption DWR/1 of 2018 as being equivalent to an Oil and Gas UK Offshore medical certificate are:

  • Netherlands Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Association Medical
  • Norwegian Directorate of Health (Petroleum Sector medical)
  • UK ENG-1 Seafarers Medical.

2.       A ‘Fit’ or ‘Unfit’ to undertake shallow water CA-EBS training certificate issued by a registered OGUK examiner.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Delegates who possess a valid and current HSE certificate of medical fitness provided by an Approved Medical Examiner of Diving (AMED) will not be required to undertake 1) and 2) above as they have already met the requirements of the Diving at Work Regulations 1997. Delegates must bring their dive medical (as above) to course enrolment on day one. For guidance regarding HSE approved diving medicals, please refer to this link.

Further details regarding this (including procedure if delegates arrive without the necessary pre-requisites) can be found at the following links:

  • OPITO CA-EBS course FAQs:

The above does not apply to delegates completing courses with LAPS Rebreather.

Course content

The combined course consists of two OPITO-approved training programmes:

  1. Further Offshore Emergency Training (FOET) with CAEBS – complements and refreshes existing emergency training, updating and reinforcing the knowledge gained on the BOSIET course with regard to helicopter underwater escape training (HUET), use of CAEBS and sea survival techniques, emergency first aid, fire fighting and self-rescue techniques using smoke hoods.

This programmed is designed to meet the further offshore safety and emergency response training requirements for personnel working in the offshore oil and gas industry. Certification is issued with a four-year validity period.

  2. Escape Chute Training (ECT) – introduces or refreshes both theoretical knowledge and practical exercises in the safe use of escape chutes increasingly used on offshore installations and vessels. Certification is valid for four years from the date of issue.

Escape chute training is an additional module developed by OPITO and acceptable under the Mutual Recognition of Basic and Refresher Safety and Emergency Preparedness Training agreement between Oil and Gas UK, Norsk olje og gass (Norway), Olie Gas Danmark (Denmark) and NOGEPA (Netherlands).

The Mutual Recognition document has been in effect since November 2007 and was revised in September 2014 to continue harmonising offshore survival training standards within sectors of the European North Sea. The course will satisfy the offshore survival training requirements for personnel intending to work in European sectors requiring compressed air emergency breathing systems (CAEBS). For European sectors not using CA-EBS please refer to the Mutual Recognition document to determine course applicability.

See our Further Offshore Emergency Training & Escape Chute Training course if you require emergency breathing system training (currently used in many areas of offshore activity outside UK and Dutch North Sea Sectors).
