Entry level

New entrants / pathway to certification

Under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), all new entrants to the maritime industries are required to complete an STCW Basic Safety Training Week before joining a vessel.

For those wishing to progress their career from initial entry level to become an engineering or electro-technical officer, a substantial amount of training and sea experience is required.

To help you understand the progression from initial entry level all the way up to Chief Engineer, please view our engineer and electro-technical officer progression charts.
