Warsash Maritime Academy offers a comprehensive range of STCW, safety and security courses. For detailed information on all of our courses, please either select All Courses or the relevant section of interest (eg, Basic Safety Training Week, fire fighting etc).
The academy has full approval from the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to offer all of the course modules and programmes required by new entrants to the maritime industries or those wishing to obtain an internationally recognised Certificate of Competency (CoC).
The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (otherwise known as STCW) are legally binding for signatory countries. The convention gives minimum legal standards for qualifications and training at sea; in short, Captains, officers, watchkeepers, and crew must all complete differing levels of MCA/STCW training.
Overseen by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), STCW was originally ratified in 1978 but major amendments were agreed in 1995 (STCW ’95).
Further major revisions to the STCW Convention were subsequently adopted by IMO in Manila in June 2010 to ensure that the necessary global standards are in place to train and certify seafarers to operate technologically advanced ships.
Known as 'The Manila amendments to the STCW Convention and Code', these amendments came into force on 1 January 2012, with the new STCW 2010 training and certification requirements being adopted from July 2013.
For more information, please link to our guide on the new training requirements under STCW 2010.
Under STCW, all new entrants to the maritime industries are required to complete an STCW Basic Safety Training Week before joining a vessel.
The STCW Basic Safety Training Week includes:
The Academy offers the STCW Proficiency in Security Awareness course at no additional cost to those who book all four courses of the Basic Safety Training Week.
