Our engineering workshops include extensive facilities for bench/hand fitting and the use of machine tools, welding, marine power plant and electrical maintenance.
We have laboratories for thermodynamics, mechanical and control engineering experiments. There is also a specialised control laboratory for electronic navigational systems operations and the maintenance of radars, navigational aids and control systems.
Our workshops and laboratories include the following engineering practice areas:
The engineering workshops and laboratories are located at Solent University's St Mary's campus in Southampton city centre.

Unless a candidate is exempted by the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) due to previous industrial experience/qualifications, an MNTB Workshop Skills Training programme has to be undertaken and passed before initial certification as Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) can be gained.
The training programme covers all marine engineering workshop skills elements, including use and care of hand tools, measuring equipment, drilling machines, centre lathes, vertical milling machines, off-hand grinding machines and welding equipment. The programme then advances to cover maintenance skills, assembly skills and electrical/electronic practice.
This training programme is normally undertaken as part of one of the EOOW Unlimited certification programmes.
