The city of Southampton has five art galleries, including the University's own Millais Gallery. Along with cinemas, nightclubs, restaurants and bars, there are also two theatres: The Mayflower stages top West End shows, musicals and ballet, and The Nuffield Theatre frequently previews plays destined for the West End.
Southampton is home to some of the largest yachting marinas on the South coast, and holds Europe's biggest on-water boat show each September, as well as hosting major sailing events such as the Volvo Ocean Race.
The area around Southampton is an exciting region of historic towns, beautiful countryside and miles of coastline. Winchester is a historic cathedral town, and Portsmouth has a long and distinguished naval history. The New Forest is a short drive from Southampton and offers 145 square miles of open heath and woodland, which is ideal for walking, horse riding and cycling. London is also only a couple of hours away from Southampton by coach or train.
If you enjoy playing sport, there are numerous leisure centres throughout the city, all with the usual facilities, but you can also find a dry ski slope, athletics track, and a municipal golf course. .
You can also watch premier league football at St Mary's Stadium, home to Southampton FC, or first-class cricket at the Hampshire Ageas Bowl, which also houses a leisure centre and tennis courts.
