Bookings will open at the end of November 2018
Our open days aim to give you an insight into what a career in the maritime industry has to offer, and the training programmes necessary to qualify as a ship's navigation, engineer or electro-technical officer in the Merchant Navy and the superyacht industry.
Many of the major British shipping companies and recruitment and training representatives who recruit cadets and crew will be there to give information about the career opportunities they offer. Our teaching staff are also on hand to talk about the academic side of training.
Here are 10 great reasons to train as a ship's officer in the merchant navy.
You can talk to our officer cadets, who are often happy to share their first hand experience of the training and life as a cadet, both at Warsash and on board ship.
You're welcome to tour the new St Mary's campus, and you'll also be able to visit the engineering and ETO workshop. There will also be 'life as an officer' presentations, as well as demonstrations in the electronic chart display simulation suite. The David Moxon student residence - where cadets can live - will also be open to visitors for guided tours.
To find out more about careers in the maritime industry, visit our careers at sea section. Here you'll find lots of information on the various sectors, as well as job profiles and career progression. You can also download our officer cadet training schemes brochure.
It's not essential for you to register, we're always pleased to see you; however it makes it easier for us - and you - if you register. It also means we can email you further information before the day itself.
We're open from 9.30am until 2.00pm, but you don't need to stay for the duration. We run a programme of events throughout the day and you can choose to come at any time. We recommend you allow two hours to make the most of the opportunities available.
It's always worth bringing your CV to show to the companies, as some may set up an interview with you there and then; but it depends on how busy they are.
Very good, depending on the particular company applied to and depending on their specific employment guidelines. Generally, any applicant must have at least four GSCEs, grades A-C (including maths, English and science). For more details see our Application and Sponsorship page.
Not at all, however it's dependent on the individual shipping company. We have had cadets at Warsash with ages ranging from 16 to 50.
The companies will be looking to recruit mainly for September 2019 and January 2020 intakes.
Representatives from the companies are available to talk to during the day. We also hold 'life as an officer' presentations by our lecturers at certain times in the day, and there are lots of other academy staff and cadets on hand to talk to.
Yes, of course. If you are a careers adviser from a school or FE college and would like to bring along a group, please email us with numbers and method of transport and we'll contact you.
Unfortunately we are a small team and, although we would love to, we do not have the capacity to take on individual visits to the campus for potential students. Our next open day is on Saturday 2 February 2019.
Yes, the University is open and you are very welcome to visit the main campus in East Park Terrace. It is about a 15-minute walk from the St Mary's campus.

If you're unable to attend but you would like details about the officer cadet training programme for your students, email us to request a brochure and we'll post you a copy. Download and print our A4 open day poster to display in communal areas.
We always welcome school and college groups, please email us to arrange parking and we'll also appoint a cadet to look after your group.
Warsash officer cadet Georgia Atkins featured in Seafarers UK's short film which highlights the opportunities of jobs at sea, as well as the training required to become a ship's officer in the Merchant Navy. The filming took place at the Warsash campus and our ship handling centre at the Timsbury Lake campus in May 2015. Watch Georgia's video.
“I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know how pleased we were to have attended the open day - it was well worth the effort to travel over from Northern Ireland. It has certainly helped my son in progressing his interest and confirming his intentions of pursuing a career as an ETO as well as assuring myself as a parent of the career progression and training requirements. There was a wealth of information available from the companies and training providers, especially the ETO cadets.” Denise Lazarescu, Northern Ireland (January 2017)
“The students of the London Nautical School had a very informative day and the sixth form students benefitted from meeting the shipping companies. For the year ten students, this was a perfect way to gain an understanding for options to enter the Merchant Navy. We will be attending again next year and look forward to seeing you again.” Ed Sumner, Senior Nautical Instructor (January 2017)
“Thank you for a superb experience at the Warsash open day. We found it very informative, everyone was so helpful and friendly and it's really helped my son with his career planning. I can thoroughly recommend the visit to anyone”. Amanda Causer, Kent (June 2015)
“I thoroughly enjoyed the open day. It was a fantastic opportunity to find out more about Warsash and talk to sponsoring companies and cadets. Everyone was really friendly and helpful.” Ed Whattoff, Lincolnshire (January 2015)
"We really enjoyed the day at your academy as it was very informative and just fantastic to meet the companies and shipping agencies. I would like to also add that we found the calibre of all the cadets we met to be so good. They were all so confident and enthusiastic about their career.” Claire Caldwell, parent, Coleraine, Northern Ireland (January 2015)
