Summer Passing Out Ceremony June 2012

Southampton Guildhall held the celebration of the Summer Passing Out Ceremony for Warsash Maritime Academy’s 144 newest officers on Saturday 23 June 2012.


The event marked the completion of a three year training and education programme for Navigation, Engineering and Electro-Technical Officer Cadets at the Academy. The newly qualified officers will be embarking on their chosen careers in worldwide shipping, working with some of the most prestigious employers in the cruise, cargo, container, oil and gas sectors.

The guest of honour Rear Admiral Ian Moncrieff CBE, CEO for the United Kingdom  Hydrographic Office congratulated the officers in a rousing speech and spoke of their Passing Out as a “major accomplishment, and a proud moment for families and friends”.

The event also welcomed representatives from many shipping organisations, Warsash Maritime Academy staff and the friends and family of the Officer Cadets. The event was filmed and streamed live via Warsash Maritime Academy’s website for the Officer Cadets’ families to enjoy watching the occasion live from around the world.

Andrew Hair, Director of the Academy said: “The cadets have every reason to be proud, not only of what they have achieved during the last three years, but also of the importance of the work they have been trained to do. Their skills and expertise, and those of other professional mariners like them, will sustain the worlds shipping trades and support the global economy. I wish them every success as they embark upon their professional careers”.

The maritime industry’s top employers and sponsors attended the ceremony and included; Anglo Eastern (UK) Ltd, Bibby Ship Management (W. Europe) Ltd, BP Maritime Services, BW Fleet Management AS , Carisbrooke Shipping Plc, Carnival UK Plc, Chiltern Maritime, Clyde Marine Training, Gulf Manning Services, Maersk Crewing Ltd, Maritime London, Nigeria LNG Ltd, NYK LNG Ship Management (UK) Ltd, Princess Cruises, Royal Auxiliary, Saga Shipping Company Ltd, Shell Ship Management Ltd, Ship Safe Training Group Ltd, and Trinity House.

The Officer Cadets were each individually handed their Certificates of Competency by Andrew Hair, Director of the Academy on the night. In addition, special awards were presented to the Deck and Marine Engineer Officer Cadets who had performed to the highest standard throughout their cadetship and whose overall attainment in theoretical and practical elements is assessed as being outstanding among their peers by the Academy's lecturing staff.

The winners of these highly acclaimed awards were:

Deck Cadet of the Year 2012: Joseph Palmer, Ship Safe Training Group on behalf of Paccship (UK) Ltd.

Marine Engineer Cadet of the Year 2012: Katie Farende, Royal Fleet Auxiliary.
