Warsash Maritime Academy welcomed well over 400 visitors to the re-scheduled Careers Open Day on Friday 8 March. Despite the wet weather it did not hinder proceedings and visitors arrived from all over the country, including Scotland, North Wales, Midlands and from the far corners of Cornwall and Kent.
The maritime industry remains buoyant and the demand for qualified ships’ officers offers excellent career prospects for those entering the Merchant Navy and the superyacht industry. The Open day showcased the lucrative opportunities available to college leavers and those looking for a change of career.
A programme of events went on throughout the day, where visitors were able to listen to talks on ‘Life as a >merchant navy officer’, take command of a ship in the bridge simulator, navigate a passage using electronic charts, walk through a virtual engine room on a ship, watch fire fighting, and distress flare demonstrations and observe students under tuition in the engineering workshop. The Southampton Solent University careers coach and staff were also on hand helping prospective students with careers advice
A key highlight to the occasion was the ability for visitors to meet the shipping companies responsible for officer cadet training and recruitment. Warsash Maritime Academy’s officer cadet courses cover navigation (deck), engineering and electro-technical officer training.The route for officer training is to apply directly to shipping companies or their representatives.
