Staff retirements from Warsash

jim-rattray-200pxIt's the end of the academic year and we say goodbye to three long-standing members of staff who are beginning their retirement.

Jim Rattray, Senior Lecturer (Merchant Vessel Engineering); Martin Roberts, Senior Lecturer (Merchant Vessel Operations) and Jan Bradford, Quality Manager, have between them amassed an amazing 66 years of service to Warsash Maritime Academy and Southampton Solent University.

Jim joined Warsash in 1998 having spent his seagoing career in the Royal Navy followed by four years as a secondary school teacher.  Martin joined us as a lecturer in 2002, having previously completed his cadet training at Warsash (when we were known as the Southampton School of Navigation), before spending many years at sea with BP.  Jan joined the Southampton College of martin-roberts-200pxHigher Education in 1976 first as the Vice Principal's secretary and thereafter holding a number of posts, including assistant registrar in the registry at Southampton Institute of Higher Education before joining Warsash Maritime Academy in 2006.

For lovers of statistics, we estimate that Jim has taught approximately 4,300 students (ranging from cadet to chief engineer, as well as yacht students) and has set around 300 assignments.  During his time here, we estimate that Martin has taught approximately 3,600 students with 210 assignments set, as well as handling over 3,500 NoE applications!  And Jan has overseen around 1,000 major audits by organisations including Ofsted, QAA, OPITO, EMSA and Lloyds Register.

We're sure you will agree that they have each made a tremendous contribution to the Academy during their time here and we hope you will join us in wishing jan-bradford-200pxthem a very long and happy retirement.
