We welcomed over 350 visitors to our careers open day on Friday 27 June. Visitors arrived from all over the country, including Wales, Norfolk, Cornwall, Lancashire and Yorkshire.
The open day showcased the excellent career opportunities in the maritime industry available to college leavers and those looking for a change of career.
There was a full programme of events throughout the day: visitors were able to listen to talks about ‘Life as a merchant navy officer’, take command of a ship in the bridge simulator, navigate a passage using electronic charts, walk through a virtual engine room on a ship, watch fire fighting demonstrations, as well as distress flare demonstrations, and observe students under tuition in the engineering workshop.
A key highlight for visitors was to be able to meet the companies responsible for officer cadet training and recruitment. Our officer cadet courses cover navigation (deck), engineering and electro-technical officer training. The route for merchant navy officer training is to apply directly to shipping companies or their representatives.
The representatives from the companies exhibiting at the open day, included:
Anglo-Eastern (UK) Ltd
BP Maritime Services
Clyde Marine Training
Royal Fleet Auxiliary
Ship Safe Training Group
wilsonhalligan Large Yacht Recruitment
If you would like to find out more about the merchant navy cadet scheme and careers in the maritime industry, please go to our careers section.
Our next careers open day is Friday 23 January 2015. To register or find out more go to the open day page.
