Southampton Solent University is setting out plans to become the global provider of choice for the maritime sector through its new Maritime Strategy 2020.
An exciting new strategy sets out a range of priorities to strengthen and embed maritime provision across the University. This includes making the most of the University’s facilities to provide the best student experience, offer value for money, and maximise industry engagement and prospects.
“The world of maritime education and training is changing rapidly and we must evolve to remain at the forefront of delivery,” says Solent’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Baldwin.
“Greater competition, uncertainty around the future of funding, and a requirement to respond to the growing needs and demands of the maritime industry means we must ensure a learning experience that consistently meets and exceeds expectations for maritime education and training.
“Shaped by a recent review of our provision, there is a need to develop a cohesive school that offers an enhanced learning experience with access to the full range of University facilities and services. We have therefore taken the decision to relocate some of the teaching based on the upper site of our Warsash campus to Southampton. The specialist facilities located on the lower part of the site will be retained.
“We appreciate any relocation has its challenges but we will ensure that the transition will be carefully planned to minimise the impact on staff, clients, and officer cadets/delegates.”
The new strategy will deliver all aspects of skills, training, education, professional development and research by:
“Our maritime strategy builds on our strengths while recognising the changes needed to respond to external challenges and opportunities. It outlines the steps we will take and the options we will explore to ensure that the ambitions and aspirations of our officer cadets, students, professionals, staff and clients drive and guide our actions in the years ahead,” adds Professor Baldwin.
