Project MariEMS final conference in Istanbul

Delegates at the Project MariEMS conference in IstanbulThe project MariEMS (Maritime Energy Management Training Strategic Partnership) closing conference took place at Bahcesehir University (BAU), Istanbul on 22 March 2018. The attendees were distinguished maritime professionals from the region including BAU’s academic staff and students.  

The Executive Director of EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency), Mr Markku Mylly was invited as a speaker and gave a talk on “Energy Efficiency and Sustainability of Shipping – EMSA Support”. The President of the Turkish Maritime Education Foundation, Dr Sualp Urkmez was another renowned speaker. These presentations were followed by Solent University's Captain Zakirul Bhuiyan, who highlighted the key achievements and final outcomes at the end of the 30-month-long project.  

Captain Zakirul Bhuiyan with EMSE Chief Executive Director, Markku LyllySouthampton Solent University and Warsash Maritime Academy is leading the Erasmus+ funded MariEMS project along with eight other partners across Europe, including four EU universities. This EU project is expected to help to reduce the energy usage on-board ships, thereby reducing emissions and pollution. The project is also helping IMO and the EU in achieving their stated emission targets through better training for the management of energy on board vessels.
